Stress is a normal adaptive reaction to an environment. But when it lasts or becomes too great, stress can cause serious physical and/or psychological problems.
A study published in 2011 by Statistics Canada showed that more than one worker in four (27 %) in Canada experienced a high level of stress at work in any normal day, and the number is similar in Québec according to data by province. Approximately 3.7 million people in the country qualified most of their days at work as being “fairly” or “extremely” stressful, according to the federal agency.
Work can therefore be a major source of stress. Causes are numerous:
• conflicts or strained relations between employees or with a boss
• work overload
• constant pressure
• tough deadlines
• unbalance between personal life and work
• lack or absence of recognition
• feeling of injustice
• harassment
• unclear responsibilities
• etc.
